PROF. PHILIP STEER

Philip Steer is Professor Emeritus at Imperial College London, having been appointed Professor in 1989. He was a consultant obstetrician for 35 years, based at the Chelsea and Westminster Hospital from 1994.

He has authored 136 research papers, 103 reviews and editorials and 65 book chapters/books. 21 of his research fellows have achieved higher degrees. His interests are the pathophysiology of labour and the effects of maternal heart disease on pregnancy.

He was Editor-in-Chief of BJOG - an International Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology - from 2005-2012, is now editor emeritus, and edits the 'BJOG on the case' series. He is an editor of 'High Risk Pregnancy - Management Options' with the fifth edition published by Cambridge University Press in 2018, who also in 2016, published the second edition of 'Heart Disease in Pregnancy' that he edits with Prof Michael Gatzoulis. He was President of the British Association of Perinatal Medicine from 1996 to 1999 and President of the Section of Obstetrics and Gynaecology of the Royal Society of Medicine from 2008 to 2009. He is an honorary member of the South African Society of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists, honorary fellow of the College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologist of South Africa, and an honorary fellow of the American Gynecological & Obstetrical Society.

Prof Steer will specifically be addressing management challenges of the morbidly adherent placenta.

  • Passing on the correct microbiome to ensure our children's future health
  • Preventing neonatal Group B Streptococcus infection - antibiotics or vaccines?
Friday, 29 November:
  • Intrapartum fetal surveillance - what the INFANT trial and the 'Each Baby Counts' studies tell us about moving beyond fetal heart rate pattern recognition
Saturday, 30 November:
  • Oxytocin for the induction of labour, including an update on the Condisox trial

DR. PETRUS STEYN

Prof Petrus Steyn is a scientist in the Department of Reproductive Health and Research (includes UNDP/UNFPA/UNICEF/WHO/World Bank Special Programme) of the World Health Organisation Headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland.

He has more than 20 years experience in Family Planning/Contraception and Reproductive Health. He is currently the lead researcher in several Family Planning studies in the Human Reproduction Team and member of the guidance group for the WHO Medical Eligibility Criteria for Family Planning.
