REFRESHER COURSE NEWS
CLINICAL SKILLS UPLIFTMENT INITIATIVE
The UCT Department of O&G will launch its inaugural Skills Upliftment Initiative supported by the Nina Lipshitz Trust, at the 2019 UCT/O&G Refresher Course.

The aim of this initiative is to invest in the advancement of surgical and procedural skills that will have an impact on the improvement of women's health.

This series of workshops will be conducted two days prior to commencement of the Refresher Course. The following exciting workshops will be presented:

CADAVER (ADVANCED) LAPAROSCOPY WORKSHOP

27 November 2019 (half day - morning)
This cadaver workshop is aimed at the intermediate - advanced laparoscopic surgeon keen on upskilling in advanced laparoscopic general gynaecological procedures. It is particularly focused on the skills needed for a Total Laparoscopic Hysterectomy (TLH) with the use of cadavers. Included in this workshop are practical tips and tricks in laparoscopic suturing, in perfxxxxxorming a TLH as well as the use of various energy devices. There will also be an introduction to the laparoscopic approach to super-specialised procedures. Proctors specialized in minimally invasive surgery, reproductive medicine/endometriosis surgery, urogynaecology and gynaecological oncology will be available to provide hands-on laparoscopic training with tips and tricks for various procedures. (Max capacity 16 delegates)

Course summary:

This will be a 'hands-on' cadaver workshop where the delegates will be given the opportunity to practise the technique of placing sacrospinous sutures for mid-compartment prolapse and tension free vaginal tapes for stress urinary incontinence. We will be limiting the number of delegates in this workshop to ensure a favourable student to proctor ratio and to allow each delegate enough time to become comfortable with the technique.
The workshop is aimed at specialist or trainee Obstetrician Gynaecologists and Urologists who have an interest in Urogynaecology, either those at the start of their learning curve or experienced surgeons looking to perfect their technique.
