CLINICAL SKILLS UPLIFTMENT INITIATIVE
The UCT Department of O&G will launch its inaugural Skills Upliftment Initiative supported by the Nina Lipshitz Trust, at the 2019 UCT/O&G Refresher Course.

The aim of this initiative is to invest in the advancement of surgical and procedural skills that will have an impact on the improvement of women's health.

This series of workshops will be conducted two days prior to commencement of the Refresher Course. The following exciting workshops will be presented:

For the next few weeks we will be highlighting two workshops per newsletter.

PLEASE REGISTER SOON as several of the workshops have limited numbers due the hands-on nature of the teaching.

BASIC (BOX TRAINER) LAPAROSCOPY WORKSHOP

26 November 2019 (half day)

This Basic Laparoscopy workshop is aimed at surgeons with minimal previous laparoscopic experience (e.g. registrars and junior specialists) using box trainer simulation. It is intended to develop the fundamentals of laparoscopic surgery i.e. camera navigation, hand eye co-ordination, dexterity and the basics of laparoscopic suturing and needle handling, as well as an introduction to the use of energy devices. It is aimed at developing the skills for minor laparoscopic procedures like laparoscopic salpingectomies for ectopic pregnancy and laparoscopic sterilisations, simulated on biological specimens. (Max capacity 18 delegates)

Course convener: Dr Lamees Ras, Urogynaecological subspecialist, GSH

ADVANCED (BOX TRAINER) LAPAROSCOPY WORKSHOP

26 November 2019 (half day)

This Advanced Box Trainer workshop is aimed at the beginner - intermediate level laparoscopic surgeons. It is intended to familiarize delegates with clinically important pelvic anatomy, the use of energy devices laparoscopically and hands-on training to become proficient at laparoscopic suturing. It is intended to develop the skills required for laparoscopic myomectomies and ovarian cystectomies, with simulation on biological specimens. There will also be an introduction to the Total Laparoscopic Hysterectomy and exposure to the 3D Laparoscopic system. (Max capacity 18 delegates)

Course convener: Dr Lamees Ras, Urogynaecological subspecialist, GSH

CADAVER (ADVANCED) LAPAROSCOPY WORKSHOP

27 November 2019 (half day)

This cadaver workshop is aimed at the intermediate - advanced laparoscopic surgeon keen on upskilling in advanced laparoscopic general gynaecological procedures. It is particularly focused on the skills needed for a Total Laparoscopic Hysterectomy (TLH) with the use of cadavers. Included in this workshop are practical tips and tricks in laparoscopic suturing, in performing a TLH as well as the use of various energy devices. There will also be an introduction to the laparoscopic approach to super-specialised procedures. Proctors specialized in minimally invasive surgery, reproductive medicine/endometriosis surgery, urogynaecology and gynaecological oncology will be available to provide hands-on laparoscopic training with tips and tricks for various procedures. (Max capacity 16 delegates)

Course convener: Dr Lamees Ras, Urogynaecological subspecialist, GSH

CAESARIAN SECTION WORKSHOP

27 November 2019

This half day workshop will focus on "What doctors should do when the patient bleeds at caesarean section". The topic is very relevant, given increasing caesarean section (CS) rates globally and in South Africa, and increasing morbidity from CS associated haemorrhage in both high and low resource settings. In addition, the SA confidential enquiry into maternal deaths has identified that bleeding associated with CS accounts for one third of haemorrhage maternal deaths both in the public and private sectors.

The workshop will have experts from Obstetrics, Gynaecology, Anaesthetics and Radiology presenting on practical aspects of management including new developments in medical management and conservative surgical measures, as well as life-saving hysterectomy and interventional radiology.

The convenor has audited this topic extensively in South Africa and the contributors all have expertise in their field, including the new Head of Global surgery at UCT, Prof Salome Maswime, and two international speakers, Professor Phil Steer (Emeritus Professor from Imperial College, London) who will provide useful information on managing morbidly adherent placenta, and Prof Steve Lindow with experience in uterine artery embolization.

At the end of the workshop, the participants will have the opportunity to practice practical skills on models with the facilitators.

The programme is outlined below, subject to minor alterations.

Convenors: Professor S. Fawcus; Emeritus Professor and Senior Scholar department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, University Cape Town; and Dr Anne Horak, Senior Specialist at Mowbray Maternity Hospital
