Prof Razeen Davids

Razeen Davids is Professor and Head of the Division of Nephrology at Stellenbosch University and Tygerberg Hospital, Cape Town, South Africa. In 2000-2001 he was an International Society of Nephrology (ISN) Fellow at the University of Toronto with Professor Mitch Halperin, studying electrolyte and acid-base disorders. His other interests include medical education and the epidemiology of chronic kidney disease. With Prof Halperin, he wrote a series of "clinical detective stories" in the QJM to engage readers in solving challenging electrolyte and acid-base cases. He also completed a PhD on the development and usability evaluation of an e-learning resource to help students and clinicians learn about electrolyte and acid-base disorders. Prof Davids is an ISN Educational Ambassador and has hosted ISN Fellows from several African countries and from Nepal. He was involved in establishing the South Africa Renal Registry and the African Renal Registry. He is also the Associate Editor of the African Journal of Nephrology.


Prof Saraladevi Naicker
Early Identification and Intervention in Chronic Kidney Disease

Professor Emeritus of Medicine and currently Chair of the Graduate Studies & Research Committee of the School of Clinical Medicine (SOCM) at the University of the Witwatersrand. She chairs the Mentorship Programme, and Plagiarism Committee of the SOCM. She currently serves as an Executive Committee member of the International Society of Nephrology (ISN), and Board Member of the African Association of Nephrology. In addition, she supervises PhD students at Wits University.

Former Head of Division of Nephrology (2001-2014) and Academic Head, Department of Internal Medicine (2009-2013) at the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, and former Head of Division of Nephrology (1998-2001) at the University of KwaZulu Natal, Durban. Past president of the South African Renal Society (1994-1997; 2012-2015) and Southern African Transplantation Society (1991-1993). She was awarded honorary life membership of the SA Renal Society in 2018. She served as chair of the Ministerial Advisory Committee on Transplantation (2017-2019).

Awards: International Distinguished Medal of the NKF(USA) in 2005; Convocation/ Philip Tobias Distinguished Teaching Award of the University of the Witwatersrand 2006; Roscoe Robinson award of the ISN in 2009; best Postgraduate Supervisor Award for the Faculty of Health Sciences at the University of the Witwatersrand for 2017. She was among the top 25 most published Wits authors in 2017, is a rated researcher by the National Research Foundation and has approximately 200 peer-reviewed and other publications.

She has served on several international committees, including the Executive Committee (2007-2009; 2019-2021) and Council (2005-2011) of the ISN, Council of Int Society for Peritoneal Dialysis (2010- 2014). Chaired several ISN committees (ISN Nominating Committee 2018-2019; ISN Educational Ambassadors Program 2009-2015, Education Committee 2007-2011; Africa Regional Committee 2000-2007); chaired the ISPD Awards and Scholarship Committee (2014-2018).


Dr Indiran Naiker
Ultrafiltration in Heart Failure: PD vs. HD

Dr Naiker is a former head of Nephrology at the King Edward VIII Hospital in Durban. He was Principal Specialist and Senior Lecturer in the Department of Medicine at the University of KwaZulu-Natal.

Dr Naiker has been a member of the Executive Committees of both the South African Renal and Transplantation Societies and was the President of the South African Renal Society from 2006 - 2008. He has served on National Committees for the purpose of formulating guidelines for dialysis and transplantation in both the public and private sector and was a member of the Local Organising Committee for the ISN World Congress of Nephrology which was held in Cape Town in 2015.

Dr Naiker is currently in private practice as a Specialist Physician and Nephrologist at the St. Augustine's Hospital, Durban.
